Qualifying for the Kentucky Derby was about graded stakes earnings until Churchill replaced the earnings method with a points system.
As competition gets tougher, the points system awards the most points to the winners of the Florida Derby, Louisiana Derby, UAE Derby (in Dubai), Wood Memorial, Santa Anita Derby, Blue Grass and Arkansas Derby; and by earning 100 Kentucky Derby points, they are guaranteed a starting post position.
